Over the past few years at Houston’s First Baptist, you might have noticed the appearance of three big words: GATHER, GROW, GIVE. This small family of words is a part of our signature statements. The three G’s help us clearly communicate our strategy or process of moving new people toward Christian maturity. When a person meets Christ, we want them to experience the church gathering for worship and teaching, connecting in community for the purpose of spiritual growth, and giving their lives to serve people locally and around the world! Each word points to the next and calls us to take action! There is nothing magical about the words or their combination. In our church’s history, we have all been taught that church is about worship, spiritual growth, and reaching the nations. However, the appearance of these particular words has helped to strengthen our processes and programs as we do Great Commission work here.
The Music/Worship Ministry has a rich history here at Houston’s First. Our entire team is standing on the shoulders of so many that have paved the way for God to be glorified with musical excellence through all the arts. Our ministry department, however, has gone through some remarkable growth in the past few years. Did you know that the resource center is connected to the Worship Ministry? Did you know that the artists in creative services are a part of a larger team? I like to say that we take care of everything from bookmarks to bassoons. The informal name for the Worship, Communications, and Production departments is the Gathering Team. It might appear to be an unconventional way to organize. It is my firm belief that pastoring people to live lives of worship happens long before and long after the weekend services. It happens from the first impression of the way something is publicized, to the gathering time itself, and on to the moment when resources are made available for continued growth. We are seeing people lead worship across all three of these departments, sometimes it is even set to music! It is our goal in this issue of Worship Teams to introduce you to all the people on our team and the role each of them plays. Enjoy the fall 2010 issue of Worship Teams, in print and online!
